Making Time

I had been wanting to go up to Idaho to see my grandma and take some pictures of her, her house and all the places she would take us when we would go visit. I just never seemed to find the time. A few weeks ago I found out she was in the hospital. I decided I would make time right then. So that weekend I flew into Salt Lake, stayed the night at my sister's house and rented a car to drive the 3 hours to my grandma's house in Burley, ID.

I didn't get the shots I had envisioned when I first thought of going up to Idaho but I'm so glad I went. She doesn't seem to be getting any better and I don't know when I'll see her again.

I've developed a few rolls of film from that trip, but I still have some more to take to the lab and a couple I will try and develop myself. Expect to see more soon.

More Dia de los Muertos

A few of the more recent posts on here are pictures of the Dia de los Muertos celebration downtown last month. It was a fun time and I shot 3 rolls of film in the hour/hour and a half I was there. I thought I was doing awesome and was going to get lots of good pictures, so when I got my scans back from the lab I hung my head in shame and possibly kicked a kitten. Ok, not really. Looking through the scans, I saw nothing I liked. So, I forgot about them for a few weeks and then looked at them again and thought "well, maybe I can crop and fix this one a bit and make it look better" and I would post that one. Then a little while later same thing. I've ended up liking a few more and even though I still don't love them, I don't hate them anymore.

These were shot with my Canon EOS 3 on Fuji NPZ 800 and were then converted to black and white in Photoshop.

I mentioned earlier that I had picked up a Canonet QL17 and I've been trying to get the hang of it. It's not a complicated camera. Just your basic shutter speed and aperture settings, the shutter realease, and the focus ring. But the focusing is what I can't seem to get under control. The majority of my frames are coming out way out of focus. Sometimes I get lucky and get a frame with soft focus that works for the image like this one. Getting my composition right is also a challange. The Canonet is a rangefinder camera and what you see through the viewfinder is a little different than what you get with an SLR which is what I'm used to. I do like that the camera is small though. And super quiet. I just need to practice with it more I guess.

I'm a pretty big Autumn De Wilde fan. She can photograph rock and roll like nobody's business.

She just shot and directed the music video for The Raconteurs' "Salute Your Solution." Cool, right? But the awesomeness does not stop there. She shot the video using a Contax 645 medium format camera and Ilford 3200 (quite possibly my favorite film ever).

Monday October 10th. I jump at the chance to go see Blitzen Trapper at the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix. It's been sooo long since I've seen any band that I like, live. Way too long. I get excited about taking some pictures too since I've been wanting to photograph some bands and more music stuff but haven't really had a chance. After an hour of deciding which camera to bring I grab my Canon Elan 7n with an 80mm lens, my newly acquired Canonet QL 17, and a few rolls of Ilford Delta 3200.

In line at the venue I start to get a little nervous that they might not let me in with my cameras and I quickly think of how Jason Bourne would do it. No, I better not elbow anybody in the face or use my keys to gouge any eyes out. I'm next. I give the nice lady $20 and she stamps my hand. No questions about the camera bag I'm carrying? Cool. Inside there are some elevated seats in the back and since the music still hasn't started I figure I would sit down for a while and get my cameras ready. I load my film, meter the light and wait patiently.

First band comes on. I decide to just keep hanging out in the back and save my film for Blitzen Trapper. There are not that many people there so I think "Sweet, I'll be able to move around and take lots of awesome pictures."

Next band starts setting up and all of the sudden the place starts filling up. Crap. Oh well, I can still move around enough but I don't want to lose this fantastic seat just yet where I can see everything and still be kind of close. I should be able to get a couple of pretty good shots from here and then I'll head down to the floor.

So the band introduces themselves as Dawes and they start playing. Hey, these guys are pretty good. I take a couple pictures. Man, these guys are really good. I go to take another picture and when the shutter fires, everthing in the viewfinder goes wonky. Dammit. I take the lens off and see the mirror inside has come loose. I think I can put it back without touching it, but when I take another picture the same thing happens. After trying this a few times I realize I am just wasting time and not really appreciating the music. I give the camera a few more swears and stick it back in the bag. I'm pretty bummed by now, but Dawes is still putting on a rockin' show so I just sit back and watch for the rest of the night. Glad I did. It was good to sit and watch.

I did try to use the Canonet, but the 40mm lens wasn't going to do much good from the back of the room. And it was too dark to focus on this camera. I still ended up kind of liking this picture:

Waaay blurry and grainy but you still get a feel for the night.

Update: This project is not so failed now. I'm giving it a second chance, although I have a little bit of a different vision for this now.

Yashica Mat 124 Test Rolls

I had bought a Yashica Mat 124 off of eBay a few years ago in an attempt to try some medium format photography, but when I got the camera I found out that it had some problems. The light meter did not work ("no big deal, I'm like MacGyver. I can figure it out") and the film counter did not work either (again, MacGyver). I had no way of knowing how far to advance the film for the next frame, so I went through a few failed rolls of trying to figure out how far the crank needed to go to take the next picture. After said failed rolls, the Yashica sadly stayed on the shelf until a few months ago when I decided to try it out again. But in my attempt to re-familiarize my self with the camera I made a huge mistake and ended up further crippling it. I mean... someone else broke it. When... would... I ever... admit.... to making... a mistake? The shutter wouldn't fire anymore so once again it was put on the shelf.

After some research on various websites, Jena thought she could probably fix it. And she mostly did. The shutter was firing now, although the film counter and light meter still did not work. I ran some test rolls through it to make sure the shutter was really firing correctly:

I went out very early one morning (who needs sleep right?) and shot some houses I thought were interesting off of Main Street.

Also from downtown. The colors are spectacular but argh!, it was the end of the roll. Bah!

Cropped. I'm not sure if it works.

And from the Pioneer Festival in Snowflake. End of the roll again but it didn't mess it up too bad; the bottom is easy enough to crop out. And wow, Fuji Pro 400H is awesome in this light.

Yes, it looks like my precious Yashica Mat 124 is indeed "working" and is capable of taking nice pictures. There is however, one problem it did not have before. The shutter now only fires when the crank makes one complete rotation, which advances the film twice what it needs to in order to move to the next frame. So, I really only get half a roll of pictures. Blast! With 120 film, that turns out to be quite expensive. As much as I love using this camera, I would rather not go broke (or rather, become more broke) and it once again faces the possibility of going back on the shelf.

It was really hot and way sunny - I should have used a different film. Most of the roll came out too washed out since it was too bright for this 400 speed film. It's a shame since I took some pictures of the giraffes being awesome and giving high fives and juggling and stuff and of the monkeys doing Act I Scene I from Romeo and Juliet. At least I got Mr. T. Rex. The second picture is the last frame on the roll of film. Those usually come out looking pretty cool with the crazy edges and stuff.

The photo lab I took my film to scanned one of the rolls from the Utah trip wrong. For each scanned frame there was half of two pictures. Ugh... You get what you pay for. Anyway, I finally got around to having them re-scan it.

Being a plastic point-and-shoot toy camera, you get some pretty cool looking stuff with the Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim when you put aside rules about composition and everything else and just shoot.

New Set-Up

I shot a few test rolls with a new set-up I'm trying out - shooting a Canon EOS 3, using a Sekonic L-508 for metering, but still sticking with the same lens (Canon EF 50mm f/1.4) and film (Fuji NPZ 800) I usually use. I was pretty sure that using the same lens and film would still give me results pretty similar to what I was doing before, but apparently throwing in 2 new variables totally changes things up. Focusing was off, colors got all weird, there was way more vignetting and some weird aberrations going on in the edges, and my exposures were all over the place; I had frames that were under-exposed and too grainy, and frames that were way overexposed and washed out all from the same location and lighting. Some of this stuff I thought would be a result of the lens and not the camera, but the lens is the same I've always used so I have no idea what happened. In the end I only got a small handful of frames that were usable. I'll keep shooting to get more familiar with this new combo and see if I can tweak it a bit.

We thought Sedona would be cooler than home (and it was -although 11 degrees cooler than 108 is still too hot) so we took a day trip and everyone ended up being really uncomfortable and grumpy. An inconsolable 2 month old and an under-slept 2 year old does not make for a good time. It did get better at the end though and I managed to finally get my camera out and take a few pictures.

The Kodak BW400CN that I had got in the mail turned out not to be Kodak BW400CN but a gray market version which might not even be a C41 film (the reason I wanted BW400CN in the first place). I'm waiting for my first roll to be developed and see what happens. I did shoot a roll of the NPZ 800 though, which after seeing the results I have decided I need to get scanned somewhere else. I suppose crappy scans are what I get for going to the cheapest place possible.

I've been slowly trying to get back into photography. I think I lost some interest in it when it seemed everyone had become a "photographer" and it just felt kind of meaningless to go out and try and do something where either a) other people who I saw as much more talented made my work seem infinitely inferior or b) other work which I saw as mediocre was being bought up like candy. Crappy candy. Like Smarties. And then I realized I was just being a pretentious douche. So I decided to pull out my cameras and starting taking pictures of whatever because it's fun and it makes me happy. There. And I just got a ton of film so it should be good time - 50 rolls of Kodak BW400CN and 50 rolls of Fuji NPZ 800 (both lots expired - awesome!), 5 rolls of Fuji Neopan 400 and 5 rolls of the new Kodak Portra. I'm excited.

I should also mention that I stumbled on some music by the Portland band Typhoon and me gusta.
